DIY Carpet Powder
If you love a fresh-smelling home but don’t love the mystery ingredients in store-bought products, this super simple DIY carpet powder is for you. With just baking soda and your favorite essential oil, you can freshen your carpets naturally in minutes. It’s affordable, customizable, and takes almost no effort to make — the kind of easy win we all need.
All you need is 1 cup of baking soda and 10–20 drops of essential oil. Pour the baking soda into a bowl or jar, add your essential oil, and mix well until the scent is evenly distributed. I like to let it sit for a few hours (or overnight) so the fragrance really blends into the baking soda. Then just sprinkle it lightly over your carpet, let it sit for 15–30 minutes, and vacuum thoroughly. That’s it!
Baking soda works wonders at absorbing odors trapped in carpet fibers, while essential oils add a clean, natural scent. Lavender creates a calm, relaxing vibe for bedrooms, lemon feels bright and fresh in living areas, and eucalyptus gives that crisp, just-cleaned feeling. You can even mix oils to create your own signature scent.
It’s such a small thing, but it makes a big difference. There’s something so satisfying about walking into a room that smells clean and welcoming — especially when you made it yourself with just two simple ingredients. Give it a try and see how fresh your home can feel!
You will need:
Baking Soda (2 lb bag on Amazon for $7.99 is best i have found and will make a lot!
Essential oil 10-20 drops of your choice for scent (You can choose any scent you like, there is so many on Amazon, but my absolute favorite for carpet powder so far is a peachy scent essential oil)
Container to store your powder in.
That's it!
Fill your container with baking soda, add 8-10 drops of your favorite essential oil blend, shake well.
To use:
Sprinkle on carpet and let sit for awhile, and then vacuum as usual. You will be left with a cleaner carpet that smells amazing.
One of the biggest benefits of using baking soda on carpet is odor absorption. It doesn’t just cover up smells — it helps neutralize them. Whether it’s pet odors, food spills, or just that “lived-in” scent, baking soda absorbs lingering smells trapped in carpet fibers and padding, leaving the room noticeably fresher after vacuuming.
Enjoy!
