Toxic Yoga Mats
Toxic Yoga Mats?
Did you know your Yoga mat might be releasing toxins into your body? When I went to buy my yoga mat, it was important to me at going on 50 years old, that i am not getting a hormone disrupting toxic yoga mat. I know, i know...my thoughts exactly in this new age of information is that 'Do i need to be worried about absolutely everything I buy now!" Sadly, yes. :( I am not perfect but I am committed to trying my best with products to make it safer in my household and for myself. I also want to make sure my readers on MyCleverLiving benefit from my "leg work" of researching and helping spread awareness about products that we all might use daily. Little changes can add up, and that is what I am committed to doing, without trying to have anxiety about it all! Hence, the YOGA!
Toxic Foam Mats – Materials to Watch Out For:
PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride)
Common in: Budget mats, gym mats, and mats sold in discount stores.
Why it's toxic: PVC is made with phthalates (plasticizers), heavy metals, and other harmful chemicals. These can off-gas over time, releasing toxins into the air and affecting your health.
Health Risks: Long-term exposure may lead to respiratory issues, skin irritation, and hormone disruption. Ladies, this is not something we should be letting touch our skin, in December 2024 I had a hysterectomy and I already have enough hormone issues. There is so many of us that do not realize that we might be doing "innocent" things that are disrupting our hormones. I had no clue! And one of those things include laying on this terrible material yoga mat. Just think, you are doing Yoga to try to help with perimenopause, menopause, stress, high cortisol, or any other perhaps hormone related issue, and the mat you are using is basically going against your goals! GRRRRR!
Environmental Impact: PVC is not biodegradable and takes hundreds of years to break down, contributing to landfill waste.
Polyurethane (PU)
Found in some “grippy” mats.
Can release VOCs (volatile organic compounds), especially when new.
Some are better made than others—look for low-VOC certifications.
EVA Foam Mats
Common in: Some low-cost yoga mats.
Why it's toxic: EVA (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate) is usually considered a safer alternative to PVC, but some cheap EVA mats still contain toxic additives or plastics that may off-gas.
Health Risks: Less harmful than PVC but still can cause allergic reactions or irritation for some users.
NBR Foam Mats
Common in: Some cheap, budget mats.
Why it's toxic: NBR (Nitrile Butadiene Rubber) is another synthetic material that may contain chemicals and toxic residues.
Health Risks: Can cause skin irritation or respiratory issues, especially when new.
Natural Rubber: Most durable, non-toxic, eco-friendly, but avoid if you have a latex allergy.
TPE: Lightweight, PVC-free, and non-toxic, but not as durable, but might be most budget friendly and beats PVC material and FOAM mat options in my opinion!
Cork/Jute: Natural and biodegradable, with an earthy feel, but less cushion.
Organic Cotton: Gentle on the skin, eco-friendly, but not grippy or cushioned.
Polyolefin Elastomer (POE) is a relatively safe material compared to many other synthetic options like PVC, EVA, or NBR, and it's commonly used in a variety of products, including yoga mats.
Below are the Yoga Mats I found on Amazon that have safer materials, and are budget friendly (between $25 to $70)
1. Natural, Eco-Friendly Material:
Sustainable: Cork is harvested from the bark of cork oak trees, which naturally regenerate without needing to cut down the trees. This makes it one of the most sustainable materials for yoga mats.
Non-Toxic: Cork is a chemical-free, non-toxic material, which is a huge plus for those who are sensitive to the off-gassing found in some synthetic mats (like PVC or EVA).
Biodegradable: Unlike plastic-based mats, cork is biodegradable and a much more environmentally friendly choice.
2. Excellent Grip and Anti-Slip Surface:
Non-Slip Surface: Cork has a natural, textured surface that provides excellent grip, even when you sweat. This is a key advantage for those doing Vinyasa, Power Yoga, or Hot Yoga, where you might experience slipping with other mats.
Increased Traction Over Time: The cork surface improves grip the more you use it, as it can naturally become stickier with regular practice, giving you even better traction.
3. Cushioning with Support:
5mm Thickness: A 5mm cork mat offers just enough cushioning for comfort during floor poses (like Child’s Pose, Savasana, or Cobra) while maintaining a stable foundation for balance poses (like Warrior, Tree Pose, etc.).
While cork mats provide a firm feel (which is great for grounding poses), the 5mm thickness ensures you don’t feel like you’re sinking too much into the mat. This balance makes it ideal for both comfort and stability.
4. Durable and Long-Lasting:
Cork’s Durability: Cork is a highly durable material that can withstand regular use without losing its texture or grip. It’s naturally resistant to wear and tear and can last for many years.
Long-Term Investment: If you're looking for a mat that will hold up over time and withstand multiple practices, a cork mat is a great option. Plus, cork’s natural surface tends to stay clean longer than many other mat materials.

Antimicrobial Properties: Cork has natural antimicrobial properties, meaning it’s resistant to bacteria, mold, and mildew. This makes it more hygienic than some other mats, especially if you tend to sweat a lot during practice.

It provides great padding for poses like Child’s Pose, Cobra, Savasana, or any stretches where you’re lying on the mat for extended periods.
Perfect for Restorative and Yin Yoga: If you're practicing slower, deep stretches or restorative poses, a 10mm mat will make these longer holds more comfortable for your body.
2. More Support for Knees and Hips:
Knee and Hip Protection: For beginners who might struggle with knee or hip discomfort in poses like Tabletop, Downward Dog, or Plank, a thicker mat helps prevent excess pressure on the joints.

Drawbacks of a 10mm Yoga Mat: less stability, heavier, might be too soft for some poses.
Benefits of a 6.35mm (0.25-inch) Yoga Mat:

Cushioning: A 6.35mm mat provides enough cushioning for joint comfort during floor poses (like Child’s Pose, Savasana, or Cobra) without being too soft. It’s especially good for people with sensitive knees, wrists, or hips.
Joint Protection: This thickness is perfect if you’re new to yoga or doing more floor-based practices, as it’ll reduce pressure on your joints during longer holds or stretches.
2. Stability for Standing Poses:
Unlike thicker mats, a 6.35mm mat still gives you a stable surface for balance poses such as Warrior or Tree Pose. It’s thick enough to provide comfort but firm enough to help you stay grounded and balanced.
Better Stability than 8mm+ mats, which can feel too soft in poses that require a stable foundation.

Perfect balance between comfort and portability. It's not as heavy as a 10mm mat, so it's easy to carry to a class or roll up and store at home.
Great for yoga studios or gyms where you might need a medium-thickness mat that works for a variety of class types.

I can not recommend these Yoga Balls enough. Especially for work. I use the marbled blue ball under my desk to relax my feet and it helps so much with foot cramps. If you have a desk job, you will be asking yourself why you have not been doing this before now. lol. It feels amazing....!
