Chair Yoga at Work in 5 Minutes!
Chair yoga at work offers a practical and effective way to enhance well-being, especially for those spending long hours at a desk. This practice involves performing yoga poses while seated, making it accessible without the need for special equipment or attire. I work 4 days a week, 10 hour shifts at a desk job and that is a lot of sitting. I wanted to implement quick stretches that I can do in 5 minutes at my desk that will help with my posture and stiffness that you can get from working at a desk job.
Sometimes I know for myself, i can get so caught up in work and typing emails or whatever I am doing I forget about my posture or how my legs are positioned and hours later once I get home, i feel that stiffness in my neck, my hips and all over.
You can do some stretches even a few times a day if you like. Just a quick position change can help as well. For instance, if you are sitting in a chair right now, are your legs crossed? I have a horrible habit of crossing my legs at my desk for long amounts of times. So i am making sure i am more aware of that.
Key Benefits of Chair Yoga at Work:
Stress Reduction: Incorporating mindful breathing and gentle stretches can significantly alleviate tension and stress associated with prolonged sitting, helping to calm the mind and improve focus.
Improved Posture: Regular practice strengthens muscles that support the spine, promoting better alignment and reducing the risk of musculoskeletal issues.
Enhanced Flexibility and Strength: Chair yoga targets various muscle groups, improving mobility and reducing the likelihood of injuries.
Increased Productivity: Short breaks for chair yoga can refresh the mind, making it easier to concentrate on tasks and perform better at work.
Accessibility: Chair yoga is adaptable for individuals of all abilities, including those with limited mobility or recovering from injuries.
Incorporating chair yoga into your daily routine can be as simple as taking a few minutes every hour to perform stretches like seated twists, forward bends, or shoulder rolls. These brief sessions can make a significant difference in your physical and mental well-being throughout the workday.
Neutral Posture Checklist
Chair Setup
Backrest: Supports the natural curve of your spine (especially the lower back).
Seat height: Feet flat on the floor or on a footrest, with knees at or slightly below hip level.
Armrests: Should support your arms without shrugging your shoulders.
Body Position
Head & Neck: Upright and in line with your torso, not jutting forward.
Shoulders: Relaxed, not rounded or hunched.
Back: Straight, with natural curves supported.
Elbows: Close to your body, bent around 90–100 degrees.
Wrists: Straight and in line with your forearms (especially when typing).
Monitor & Desk
Monitor height: Top of the screen at or just below eye level.
Distance: About an arm’s length away.
Keyboard & Mouse: Easy to reach, so you’re not overextending.
Extra Tips
Take micro-breaks: Stand, stretch, or walk for a few minutes every 30–60 minutes.
Use a sit-stand desk if available, alternating between sitting and standing.
Try not to stay in one position too long—even the "best" posture can cause strain if held too long.
Did you know your Yoga mat might be releasing toxins into your body? When I went to buy my yoga mat, it was important to me at going on 50 years old, that i am not getting a hormone disrupting toxic yoga mat. I know, i know...my thoughts exactly in this new age of information is that 'Do i need to be worried about absolutely everything I buy now!" Sadly, yes. :( I am not perfect but I am committed to trying my best with products to make it safer in my household and for myself. Find out more about what material Yoga mats are toxic
My favorite Yoga finds on Amazon that I use:
I can not recommend these Yoga Balls enough. Especially for work. I use the marbled blue ball under my desk to relax my feet and it helps so much with foot cramps. If you have a desk job, you will be asking yourself why you have not been doing this before now. lol. It feels amazing....!
My Yoga strap that I use is this one below. It's $5 on Amazon and does exactly what it's meant to do, which is to help me stretch. You can use at home, or easy to pack into your yoga bag for yoga classes or take with you during travels.
